Itamar Borges Junior

Graduated in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1991).

Master in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1994) in the area of Experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics.

PhD in Physics in the area of Atomic and Molecular Theoretical Physics / Theoretical Chemistry by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1998).

He completed post-doctoral studies in the area of Theoretical Chemistry at UFF, University of Coimbra (Portugal), UFRJ and Texas Tech University (USA). He entered the Military Engineering Institute (IME) through a public competition in 2002, where he is currently a full professor.

Since 2003, he has been a research productivity fellow at CNPq, and this year he was awarded the FAPERJ Young Scientist Award. It was contemplated with funding for its research by various development agencies, by the Ministry of Defense and by the Army.

In 2012 he won a Fulbright Commission grant from visiting professor in the USA. He coordinates the Theoretical-Computational Chemistry Group of the IME.

In the area of academic administration, he was an academic advisor to the Vice-Rectory of the IME in 2009 and presided over the Institute's Self Assessment Committee (CPA) in 2009-2010.

He was Pro-Rector of the Graduate School of IME from June 2005 to February 2009 when he coordinated the administrative restructuring of the Vice-Chancellor and the stricto-sensu courses. As Pro-Rector he conceived and coordinated the creation of the interdisciplinary program of Post-Graduation in Defense Engineering (PGED) at IME, whose master's and doctoral degree were approved by CAPES in 2008.

From December 2009 to June 2012 he was coordinator of the PGED. In his area of scientific activity he is a reviewer of several international scientific journals.

He participated in the organization of several scientific events, was vice-coordinator of the Brazilian Symposium on Theoretical Chemistry (SBQT) in 2011 and general coordinator of the event in 2013.

In 2016 he was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Military Engineering (ABEMI).

He has experience in Theoretical-Physical Chemistry, working mainly in the following subjects: ab initio calculations including excited states, density functional theory (DFT), spectroscopy, electronic and optical properties of materials, surfaces, properties of electronic density and effects of radiation in matter. In addition to his interest in the fundamental aspects of these themes, his current research focuses on energy materials, surfaces, heterogeneous catalysis, supercritical fluids and organic photovoltaic systems.
